Student Services – Student Retention Counselor – Career Services
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Will develop, monitor, and facilitate a student retention program for current and re-entering students to foster each individual student’s success; available to counsel and resolve student inquiries, attendance and other student concerns as they arise. Responsible for exploring community resources a student may utilize. Work with current students and past graduates on developing realistic career plans, a resume and interview skills. Establish and maintain relationships with local employers. Maintain attrition rates, graduate, and placement statistics.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Develop, monitor, and facilitate the activity of the student retention
program.
- Plan, implement, and direct programs and services that assist students to reenter, continue, and complete their academic programs.
- Coordinate specific programs and/or community resources to assist students with academic and personal issues that may interfere with their academic programs.
- Maintain daily attendance, notify program directors of students who are experiencing problems, and contact these same students that have attendance issues.
- Meet with students who have withdrawn to establish reason for withdrawal and possibility for re-entry.
- Provide administrative coordination, support and advice to student support programs, such as peer tutoring.
- Correlate attrition/retention statistics to identify student withdrawal patterns, such as identification of specific courses or programs that have high drop rates.
- Develop, direct programs and services designed to equip students and alumni with necessary job search skills, resume writing and employment preparation strategies.
- Implement a career counseling program to provide information and counseling services to students and alumni concerning career opportunities, vocational choices, and employment trends.
- Establish and maintain liaison with representatives from organizations, agencies. and corporations to promote and coordinate career fairs and employment opportunities.
- Maintain records of placement activities, graduate, and employer surveys sharing trends with the individual program directors and college administration.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Experience in higher education involving admissions, student retention, career development and placement.
- Ability to work independently and follow-through on assigned tasks.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team
- Ability to relate to a diverse student population
- Ability to communicate effectively (writing, listening, and speaking)
- Ability to problem –solve, make decisions, and manage conflict
- Ability to inspire and motivate students.
- Desire to work with students
